The first step in solving any problem is recognizing there is one…….

California, WE have a PROBLEM!

In part one of our California, WE have a PROBLEM blog we discussed taxes, our public school rankings, infrastructure, and our welfare system. In part two we will be discussing workers’ comp costs, environmental issues, water storage, and high speed rail.

California Workers’ Comp Costs Are One of the Highest in the Nation

While there has been some reform to the workers’ comp system with the passing of SB 863 that took effect in 2013 and the recent passing of SB 1160 there is still much more that needs to be done. The entire system needs to be reanalyzed and streamlined. There needs to be much more emphasis put on the fraud aspect and criminal prosecution of fraudulent claims, service providers, and employers. We must get our workers’ comp rates down and in line with other states to make our state business friendly and bring jobs back to California.

California, the Environment and Jobs

Being on the forefront of environmentalism is a great, however, we must find a better balance between environmentalism and jobs. It seems California politicians are trying to eliminate all manufacturing jobs from our state. Manufacturing jobs are the lifeblood of a strong economy and middle class. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, California’s biggest export over the last two decades has been the middle class. We cannot continue this trend or California will collapse under the economic strain and you will see a bigger disparity between the wealthy and the poor. It shouldn’t be that manufacturing companies are squeezed out of California from strict regulations, high taxes, and high workers’ comp rates to set up shop 500 miles away at a fraction of the cost. Why is it that a California based company like Tesla set up a battery manufacturing plant in another state? Why did Lucid Motors based in Menlo Park build their factory in Arizona? The Answer: The cost and regulations to do business in California is way too high!! I will work tirelessly to make changes to policy to bring business back to California while keeping the environment in the forefront.

California Needs More Water Storage, Period

California has not built a dam in almost 40 years! We must increase our water storage capabilities! California is the top state in the United States for all farm income, yet we cannot provide our farmers with enough water to survive! Our population has steadily increased for decades, we’ve built more houses, we’ve built more commercial buildings, but we haven’t built more water storage! We have had year after year of drought with California finally getting some relief in the 2016-17 winter season. Had we had more water storage we would not have been in as bad of shape prior to this year. I will work with state and federal authorities to increase our states water storage and supply much needed water to our agriculture and citizens alike.

Jerry Brown’s “Pet Project” High Speed Rail

High Speed Rail Is NOT What California Needs to Be Spending It’s Tax Dollars on Right Now! I understand that everything is more expensive to build as time goes on and that High Speed Rail is no exception, however, it is NOT what we need to be building at this critical point in time. There are so many far more pressing infrastructure issues that need to be tended to long before we waste anymore taxpayer money on High Speed Rail! Construction needs to cease ASAP! We need to fix our roads, fix our bridges, and build more water storage!
